Gallery of the Natural History Museum at Kalemegdan
Kalemegdan Park and the Belgrade Fortress have always been among the most recognizable landmarks of Belgrade. As some of the city’s most visited attractions, they play an important role in both Belgrade tourism and tourism in Serbia in general.
Besides beautiful walking paths, panoramic river views and historical monuments, this area is also home to several important museums in Belgrade. While exploring the fortress and enjoying the atmosphere of Kalemegdan, visitors can discover the Military Museum, as well as the Gallery of the Natural History Museum.
🏛️ The oldest scientific institution in Serbia
The Gallery is part of the Natural History Museum, the oldest scientific institution in Serbia, founded back in 1895. For many generations, especially school children, visits to the museum and its exhibitions remain an unforgettable memory.
The museum itself was established thanks to the efforts of prominent Serbian scientists including geologist Jovan Žujović, botanist Josif Pančić and anatomist Lazar Dokić. Throughout its history, the museum changed several locations before settling into the building at Kalemegdan, where most of its exhibitions are still held today.
🕰️ A mysterious building at Kalemegdan
The exact origin of the building remains unknown. According to one theory, it was built during the 19th century as an Ottoman guardhouse protecting the main approach to the Belgrade Fortress from the direction of the Stambol Gate.
Another, more mysterious version claims that the building was constructed for the Masonic lodge “Ali Koč”, with some visitors pointing to the unusual room layout and decorative details that resemble Masonic symbolism.
🦴 Exhibitions and visitor experience
Exhibitions at the Gallery of the Natural History Museum are usually thoughtfully designed, educational and suitable for visitors of all ages. Since the exhibition space is relatively compact, tours are not too long, making them especially enjoyable for children and families visiting Kalemegdan.
In previous years, entrance on Thursdays before noon was often free of charge, although visitors should check current information directly with the museum before planning their visit.
The Gallery and the Natural History Museum also regularly participate in the popular Night of Museums event in Belgrade, when special exhibitions and additional programs attract a large number of visitors. During this event, the Gallery often becomes one of the most visited exhibition spaces in the city.
