From the area of today’s Voždovac municipality, Karađorđe led the Serbian uprising that resulted in the first liberation of Belgrade. In memory of this event, the area was named Voždovo suburb, later becoming Voždovac. Among notable historical figures, Vasa Čarapić, one of the leaders of the First Serbian Uprising, was born in Beli Potok at the foothills of Avala, while one of the greatest military leaders of the 20th century Vojvoda Stepa Stepanović was born in Kumodraž, where you can visit his birthplace.
