🌿 Ružica Church – the hidden church within Belgrade Fortress
Belgrade Fortress and Kalemegdan form one of the most important historical complexes in Belgrade. This is the place where the city began to grow and develop into the modern capital known around the world today. Exploring the entire fortress complex takes time, especially because many hidden places remain out of sight until visitors wander deeper into its stone paths and old walls.
One of those hidden gems is the famous Ružica Church. Located in the quiet Lower Town area of Belgrade Fortress, the church seems almost built into the fortress walls, peacefully overlooking the rivers of Belgrade. Visitors can reach it by descending the stone staircase between Zindan Gate and Despot Gate or by climbing uphill from the Nebojša Tower near the Church of Saint Petka.
⛪ The history and legends of Ružica Church
According to legend, three sisters – Ružica, Marica and Cveta, sisters of the nobleman Bogdan Jakšić – built three churches within Belgrade Fortress to protect the unconquered Jakšić Tower. Although the exact construction date of Ružica Church remains unknown, historians believe the building may originally have served as a gunpowder warehouse before being transformed into a church after the fortress came under Serbian control in 1867.
Ružica Church is considered the oldest church in Belgrade and an important cultural monument. Throughout centuries, it shared the fate of Belgrade Fortress itself — repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt from the ground up. Ivy slowly growing around the church walls today gives the impression that nature itself protects this sacred place.
⚔️ A unique military church
At the entrance stand two bronze statues — one representing a Serbian infantry soldier from World War I and the Balkan Wars, and the other a knight from the era of Emperor Dušan. Ružica Church is also known for its unusual chandeliers made from military materials such as bullet casings, officer swords and ammunition, reflecting the church’s deep connection with Serbian military history.
Because of these remarkable details and decorations made from military artifacts, Ružica Church is often listed among the most interesting churches in the world.
🙏 Spiritual significance and atmosphere
The church is dedicated to the Holy Mother of God and stands next to the Church of Saint Petka and its famous holy spring. Its appearance and atmosphere make it very different from most Orthodox churches in Serbia.
As tourism in Belgrade continues to grow, Ružica Church attracts not only Orthodox believers but also international visitors interested in history, architecture and spirituality. The church is open every day from 7 AM to 6 PM.
