Rakovica Municipality

Rakovica got its name from the large number of crayfish that were once found in the Rakovica stream. It is located along the lower course of the Topčider River and spreads across surrounding hills. Large areas are covered with dense forests, enriched by numerous streams, rivers, and a nearby lake, all contributing to the pleasant microclimate this municipality is known for.

With its natural beauty, Rakovica represents a great yet still undiscovered place for a short escape within Belgrade. The presence of many churches, monasteries, and cultural-historical landmarks further enhances the tourist offer of this part of the city.

Miljakovac Forest is located on the slopes above the Miljakovac neighborhood, while above the left side of the Manastirski stream valley lies the park-forest Košutnjak, which together with Topčider forms a unique ecological and cultural-historical area ideal for day trips.

At the foothills of Mount Avala lies Pariguz Lake, one of the most beautiful lakes in Belgrade. It is planned to be connected with Avala by walking and cycling paths, while a modern sports and recreational zone is also planned around the lake, making it one of the main future excursion spots near Belgrade.

Additionally, the hospitality offer is excellent. The number of hotels, restaurants, pizzerias, and cafés may surprise you, but it provides a strong foundation for positioning Rakovica as one of the top municipalities for a relaxing weekend in Belgrade.

Belgrade’s popular green areas such as Topčider, Košutnjak, and Miljakovac Forest are perfect for recreation, sports, and outdoor activities, while Pariguz Lake and its surroundings offer great potential for fishing and nature-based tourism.

Away from the city noise, visitors can explore diverse cultural and historical sites. Rakovica Monastery, where Serbian Patriarchs Dimitrije and Pavle are buried, the Rakovica Cultural Center, as well as shopping centers, sports facilities, and amusement parks, offer a wide range of activities.

An interesting fact is that the Kneževac railway station appeared in the cult Serbian movie “When I Am Dead and Pale”.

Throughout the year, Rakovica hosts various events for all generations, including: the International Rakovica Carnival, Rakovica Summer, Rakovica Days, White Cross, April Fool’s Children’s Carnival, Resnik religious procession, Theatre Fest, Spiritual Poetry Gathering, and Short Drama Festival.
