What is Little Danube?

Little Danube is part of the experimental estate of the Faculty of Agriculture “Radmilovac”, located near the settlement of Vinča. The idea was to create a miniature version of the Danube, 1.2 km long — from its source in the Black Forest all the way to Đerdap. This concept has turned into one of the most interesting day trips near Belgrade, ideal for visitors of all ages.

To bring this unique “small Danube flow” to life, the old stream bed was cleaned, and the water now springs from a depth of up to 120 meters. Since then, Little Danube has developed into a beautiful walking area surrounded by nature, water, lakes, and fish ponds, enriched with authentic features that make it stand out.

If you’re wondering how to get to Little Danube, the best option is by car or public transport. Several bus lines connect the nearby stop with the city center and surrounding neighborhoods, making the journey simple and convenient. For visitors who like to plan ahead, ➡️ check the detailed directions and the Little Danube map showing access routes and walking paths.

Three sections of Little Danube

Little Danube is designed as an educational, natural, and tourist area offering visitors three clearly defined sections. Perfect for a family outing, a relaxed walk, or a full day in nature. That’s why Little Danube is considered one of the most popular excursions near Belgrade, suitable for all generations looking for a mix of nature, learning, and relaxation, including fishing enthusiasts.

1. Small Danube Wilderness

The first part of the complex is symbolically named Small Danube Wilderness, covering as much as 6 hectares of untouched forest. This is a place where you truly feel far from the city, even though Little Danube is only a few kilometers from central Belgrade. It serves as an introduction to the entire experience, making it an ideal starting point for visitors who enjoy peaceful walks and an authentic riverside atmosphere.

2. Honey Valley, wine cellar and tastings

The second section leads through the central part of the estate, where on the left you’ll find Honey Valley — home to bees producing high-quality honey. On the right side are the wine and spirits cellar and a tasting room. Here you can try and purchase products that are grown and produced directly on this estate.

Highlights include: Rector’s wine, tomato jam, fresh fruit, and freshly pressed juices. This part of the complex is especially appealing to visitors interested in local food and authentic products, making it a great stop for those who want their trip near Belgrade to include a unique culinary experience.

3. Lower section – the most beautiful part of Little Danube

Just when you think the visit has already offered plenty, you enter the third section of Little Danube — considered by many to be the most beautiful and interesting part of the complex. This is the area that impresses both children and adults and often brings visitors back again.

This is where the Little Danube experience truly comes to life. Numerous small lakes, a miniature Đerdap reservoir, stilt houses, wooden bridges, and open grassy areas create a unique natural setting. Because of this, it is especially popular for family outings and for anyone looking for a peaceful nature escape near Belgrade.

Lakes, Fish Ponds and Fishing

Little Danube is a true water landscape — from experimental lakes, through fish selection ponds, to breeding areas and fishing lakes. For a small fee, you can also enjoy fishing near Belgrade, which is especially popular on weekends.

Between the lakes and ponds, there are well-maintained grassy areas, regularly mowed and cared for. During the warmer months, they bloom and carry natural scents, creating the feeling of a hidden oasis far from the city noise. Walking here is a real pleasure — especially for families, couples, and anyone looking for a peaceful one-day nature trip.

Thanks to its diversity and careful layout, this part of the complex increasingly attracts visitors who enjoy relaxed walks, nature photography, and discovering new places to visit near Belgrade. As everything is connected by wooden bridges and small paths, exploring is intuitive, pleasant, and full of small discoveries typical of such water-rich environments.

Small Đerdap Reservoir and Water Garden

This area is home to the well-known Small Đerdap Reservoir — a lake with fish spawning areas, a stilt house, and enough space for larger boats. The grassy areas are connected by wooden bridges, giving the entire landscape a fairytale-like atmosphere.

In this part of Little Danube, the atmosphere becomes especially vivid — the water is calm, surrounded by greenery, and the bridges lead you from one small scene to another. This section is often a favorite among visitors looking for family-friendly places or peaceful nature spots near Belgrade.

There is also a well-maintained animal barn here, where younger visitors can enjoy spending time with goats, sheep, donkeys, and other farm animals. Parents and adults also enjoy this stop — it feels like a small return to childhood, making every family outing even more special.

In addition to the animals, there are two spacious bird aviaries. Their constant chirping gives this part of Little Danube a unique atmosphere — a natural soundscape that follows you as you walk, take photos, or simply enjoy the calm surroundings.

Among the newer additions is also a wooden lookout tower. It is a perfect place for a short break and a panoramic view of the water surfaces and surrounding grassy areas. The height is not dominant, but it is enough to provide that pleasant “view from above” that completes the experience of this place.

There is also a water botanical garden with a live exhibition of aquatic plants, as well as Brvanara – a public aquarium where you can see both cold-water and warm-water species that inhabit the Danube and its tributaries.

Alaska Cabin, Evolution Island and Prehistoric Fishing Settlement

Further along the route, you will find Alaska Cabin — a fishing museum, as well as a replica of Great War Island, along with Evolution Island and a prehistoric fishing settlement. There is also an open-air classroom, an excellent place for group visits, workshops, and educational activities for children.

You reach this part by crossing several more charming wooden bridges that connect the paths and guide you through quieter sections of the complex. Along the way, various educational exhibits appear, making the walk through Little Danube naturally turn into a light lesson in history, nature, and traditional river life.

Not far from the museum, visitors come across additional fish ponds and smaller water areas, with a highlight being the wooden “children’s boat” — a favorite spot for kids who run, climb, and play here like true little explorers of the Danube. This is one of the reasons why Little Danube is such a popular weekend destination for families with children.
