A weekend in Belgrade doesn’t have to be spent at home or in one place. With good planning, a single day can turn into a rich and memorable experience. Unexpected landscapes and unique moments are all around us—if we are curious enough to explore them. Surčin municipality, located just 15 kilometers southwest of the city center, is perfect for a relaxing afternoon picnic or a peaceful weekend getaway near Belgrade.
Surčin stretches across the fertile and wide plains of Srem, bordered by the Sava River and Bojčin Forest on one side, and vast wheat fields on the other. It is a destination worth visiting throughout the year, as each season brings a new atmosphere and experience. In this natural environment, the local hunting grounds are home to hundreds of majestic European deer, while the forests are rich with wild boar, hares, and bird species. Although one of the youngest municipalities, Surčin is among the most developed tourist areas near Belgrade.
Along the banks of the Sava River, stretching for around 50 kilometers, four tourist docks have been built, allowing visitors to reach attractive locations by boat. These pontoons are connected by roads and walking paths, forming organized nautical villages that support the development of boating and river tourism. In addition to the Sava, Surčin also features small lakes, canals, and fishponds, making it ideal for fishing, while its forests and open fields create excellent conditions for hunting tourism.
The diverse offer of Surčin includes traditional farms (salaš), horse stables, and ethno houses that preserve the authentic Srem atmosphere. Numerous churches, monasteries, and cultural landmarks further enrich the tourist experience, making this area one of the most interesting zones for exploring nature and attractions around Belgrade.
A visit to Surčin is also a great opportunity for children to discover and learn more about this part of Belgrade. Rural households often organize workshops in traditional crafts, cooking, and handmade skills. Ethno households and farms offer carriage rides, allowing visitors to truly experience the spirit of Srem. You can visit the carriage exhibition at the Bulić Stud Farm, go horseback riding at Salaš Stremen (traditional restoraunt & farm), or enjoy traditional equestrian events organized by the Dobanovci riding club.
Traditional lifestyle and Vojvodina-style architecture can be seen almost everywhere. Old houses with beautifully carved wooden porches once reflected not only their purpose but also the wealth of local families. Imagine courtyards with traditional wells, carefully arranged tools, and wooden tables set in the shade of large trees. On those tables, you will find the rich flavors of Srem cuisine—strudel, poppy seed pastries, goulash, fish specialties, and homemade fruit brandy. The people of Srem, known for their love of music, preserve this spirit through cultural associations and local musicians. Tamburica bands, in particular, reflect the authentic and lively lifestyle of the region, creating a unique agrotourism experience near Belgrade.
For adventure lovers, we recommend visiting Tarzan Beach in Progar. In addition to a well-maintained swimming area with showers and sports facilities, this spot is famous for its old willow tree leaning over the Sava River. A rope is attached to its branch, allowing you to swing and jump into the water, just like Tom Sawyer. You can also plan a perfect day trip by packing lunch, bringing cold drinks, and enjoying a relaxing bike ride along scenic routes through Surčin. Along the way, you will find plenty of welcoming places to rest, have a meal, or even stay overnight while soaking in the beauty of nature.
Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the wide range of recreational facilities. There are tennis courts, sports centers, and excellent swimming options. Klub S features one of the largest swimming pools in the Balkans, while Aqua Center Živković, Aqua Park Hollywoodland, and Queen Pools offer great places to cool off during summer. With excellent conditions for cycling, recreational and therapeutic horseback riding, walking, and outdoor sports, Surčin is ideal for an active day in nature.
Fishing enthusiasts will find their place along numerous canals, lakes, and fishponds, especially in areas surrounded by reeds that create a unique atmosphere. When the wind moves through the reeds, the entire landscape resembles a gentle, wavy sea.
Surčin municipality активно развија туризам and supports many authentic events throughout the year, such as Bojčin Cultural Summer, Strašilijada, the “Divan je kićeni Srem” festival in Dobanovci, Biserna Griva Donjeg Srema, Sremčki Preskok, Days of Srem, traditional craft workshops, theatre festivals, and open-air poetry events. All of these contribute to the unique identity of Surčin and make it a destination worth exploring.
